Slovenia has about 60% of its surface covered in trees and some of them are very old, in fact we have the oldest, most untouched forests in Europe.
The only countries in Europe with more forest than Slovenia are Finland and Sweden and Finns in particular, absolutely love coming here to see our varied flora and fauna combined with all the castles, caves, mountains, rivers and lakes.
The huge variety of natural colours here, are where we get the name "Green Slovenia" and we are quite sure you won't have seen so many amazing shades of green in your own country.
There are numerous recommended walks or bike trails you can do, many direct from Lipizzaner Lodge, others you can cycle, drive or be driven to. Some guests have enjoyed being taken by horse drawn carriage though the forest.
It doesn't matter how you get into the forest, the key thing is that you schedule some time to enjoy these amazing canopies during your trip.
You also need to know that we have bears, lynx, wolves, deer, stags and cuddly dormice in the forests. We haven't had any guests eaten yet and the animals won't bother you, but wow, it sure is exciting to think you might catch a glimpse of one.
A greater danger in the forest is that you might get lost, so on some trips we recommend taking a local guide. There are wonderful forest paths everywhere, through ancient woods, lines of beautiful Silver Birch, Beech tree forests and more modern day Pines, but some routes are specifically for logging and don't actually lead anywhere, so you have to be careful.
For those who enjoy an early morning walk we have our own Early Bird Forest walk with our local forester friend. He goes out at 6.45am every morning for a 1.5 - 2 hour walk into the forest and he has been showing our guests animal tracks and other signs to read in the forest. You will also find a secret viewpoint for Predjama castle and get to climb up the ladder into a forest hunting lodge for a great vista. (Don't worry, you can have your breakfast when you get back)!
Our guides can take you on lots of other walks. Just 20 minutes away in the forests behind Postojna hides another natural treasure that you probably haven't heard about, Rakov Skocjan. This is a protected forest area where you can walk all day on trails and find 2 large natural stone arches created from an enormous prehistoric collapsed cave.
These forests were also home to Slovenia's own Robin Hood, Martin Kirpan, another legend that you are probably not familiar with, but we are sure you would be interested to find out more about a guy who was so strong he carried his horse through the forest to evade capture when troops got close and might hear the hooves.
Other forests hide Partisan wartime military hospitals and secret WW2 printing presses, trenches and bunkers from wars gone by. We really recommend going to Cerkno to try to find the Secret Wartime Hospital (75 mins, but better to take the country roads for the spectacular views and take a little longer). The story, landscape and bravery are simply breath taking. At one stage on the walk to the hospital you can look up, straining your neck muscles and see a tiny cave bunker in the cliff, where 2 incredibly brave men had to climb up to and man a defensive machine gun post.
You can find other towers and hidden caves and last, but not least, if you want to see a bear for sure, then a local hunter knows exactly where to go. For kids and big kids there is a forest adventure park 10 minutes away from Lipizzaner Lodge, next to the Postojna caves, where kids can monkey around in the tree tops!
