the most beautiful river in Europe
It takes just 40 minutes to get to the Soca river from the Lodge before it heads into Italy and becomes the Izonso. You need just one or two hours to get to the source of the Soca as it bursts out from the Alps. But you could spend hours and hours in the bit in between.. the Soca valley admiring the beauty of this emerald river and hopefully you will!
The day trip options are varied and huge for ways in which to enjoy this river. Most guests stop for a coffee or ice cream at a fabulous little café in the village of Kanal with an amazing picture perfect bridge hanging over the clear aqua water. There are numerous villages, towns, bridges and gorges to visit along the river. Each place has its own character and unique way of showing off the beauty of this crystal clear water.
But there is also a dark history hanging over the shores and the mountain sides.. The soca river was the front line for the scene of the largest mountain battle of all time in WW1 with the Italians on one side and the Austrians and Germans on the other. This clear blue water ran red and over one million soldiers were killed. There is an absolutely fantastic museum in Kobarid which tells this brutal story in a human and compassionate way.
It is almost impossible to believe that humans could be fighting in such a beautiful location, but you can stillfind trenches, fortifications, and bunkers along the way to help you understand the deep history of this strategically important region.
This wonderful river is perfect for rafting, kayaking and swimming and you can read more about a great secret walk we found to one of the 2 gorges we have found so far along the river in another secret places to visit tip.. the Soca Gorge.
More to come..
