Little Storm Falls (Grmečica)
Waterfall is "Slap" in Slovenian and there are so many of them hidden away here in all different shapes & sizes, with the best ones needing a little bit of a Green hike to get to meet them close up & personal!
If you are lucky, you will end up getting to walk alongside the river that is fed by your chosen waterfall and more than likely you will hear the thunder of the shute in the distance on your approach and then suddenly you get that "SLAP in the face" as the waterfall reveals it's unique natural beauty..
Fortunately for us visitors struggling with the local lingo, a decent translation of Grmečic Slap is Little Storm Waterfall and this one sure does what it says on the tin, being a little belter of a waterfall, nestled into a side valley in the Julian Alps, with a white sandy pebble beach and stunning 30 min river hike to go find it..
And like so many of the best Secret Places to Visit here in Green Slovenia, Little Storm Slap is hidden away in plain site, but not far off the main road between a lake you might have heard about, Bled and a lake you really should hear about, if you haven't, Bohinj!

How to Find Little Storm Waterfall..
This is one of those many Secret Places to Visit that friends had told us about and was high on our "Hit List" to go find, but the problem is this list is as long as a dragon's tale!
How difficult could it be to find a waterfall just over half way between Bled and Bohinj?!
But it turned out to be quite lucky that we had left it so long to come find Little Storm Falls for the first time cos our friend's instructions were to find a narrow stone road somewhere near a zebra (pedestrian) crossing and a pub, then park in a small muddy car park and hike along the riverside to get there..

Well one of the really great things we noticed about Green Slovenia is that the EU is still pouring project money into a country that will remind you more of Switzerland than one in desparate need, but hey ho, this is good news for Little Storm vistors cos they certainly splashed the cash and went & built a brand spanking new car park, bridge AND a BIKE HIKE path to help us get there..
There are even signs, ok in Slovenian, we couldn't expect the world, but we were very pleasantly surprised to get a Rolls Royce experience!
So it is just about an hour to Bled from the Lodge and you currently still have to skirt alongside one of the most beautiful lakes in the world to link up with the road out to Bohinj and into the Julian Alps..

(Some of that EU dosh would actually be very well spent on completing the much needed bypass planned for Bohinj traffic to completely avoid Bled, but don't hold your breathe and luckily, it is always a breathtaking view passing lake Bled as it happens)..
The road after Bled is good as the mountains stast their high embrace and you zig zag next to the mighty Sava Bohinjka river and the train line for just about 15 mins..
Just before Bitnje and well before Bohinj Bistrica you reach the tiny hamlet of Nomenj, where there is indeed a Zebra (pedestrian) crossing and just a restaurant that has been converted from an old train station on the left side of the road, but most importantly there is that lovely big, brand spanking new car park for you to pull into with a simple left turn!

It really is as easy as that! Now just put your hiking boots on, grab a bottle of water and prepare for an unexpectedley simple, beautiful AND flat 30 min walk to the waterfall!
It is worth noting this particular walk really is 30 mins & FLAT all the way and not many hikes in Green Slovenia will be flat the whole way, so if you are carrying a bit of an injury into your hol, or might have trouble with longer distances or slopes and rocks, then DEFFO build this hike into your plans!
(You would be surprised to know how many guests do actually turn up to the Lodge with some kinda injury, but are so determined not to miss their hollibubbles in Green paradise.. we once helped an American man with plaster on his ankle & foot do a little cave tour.. very slowly and very carefully)!

From the car park there are yellow signs that do reappear at points where you need them along the path, but the trickiest bit to navigate is at the start..
You are simply going past or through the garden of the station restaurant, then follow the the stone track going under the small railway tunnel..
This would have been the old route to go drive to the falls and then the only place to par would have been in a pokey little muddy further along the route, next to a field!

So this path is now MUCH better as a purely hiking path and one for the farmer to bring his tractor along!
The track is absolutely fantastic for hiking, with high green walls on either side of this narrow valley and wide open fields along the way!
The only thing you might have to contend with is parts of the track being muddy at times, but if you rock up here in the middle of summer then one of our strong tips for going to see waterfalls and gorges is to actually go visit them a day or two AFTER any rainfall you might get, cos then you have more chance of seeing them full with water, but of course the track might have a few puddles too!

And this is another major reason not to treat your Green Slovenia holiday planning like a "Join the Dots" competition, spending 2 days in one "region you cant say the name of", 2 days in the next etc, cos then you might be way too far from WHAT you want to see at the WRONG time to exploit the best conditions, weather, traffic, day of week, whatever..
Green Slovenia is so ridiculously tiny and easy to get around that we quickly noticed, (as you will too, but only when you are here and it might be too late then), that it is way better to find a fab comfy base location where you can see the lot and CHOOSE which days are the best to do WHICH things.. Get your logitics right and you CAN see the lot, without rushing around!

We consistently tip the very best times to visit Green Slovenia are in April, May, September and October as the weather is usually perfect AND the multiple water features are more likely to be full, but not everyone has the choice to come then.
Anyway, we were here in October with a blue sky, the first crinkles of a golden autumn on the trees AND a lot of flowing crystal clear water!

The track leads on from the old muddy car park to a strange, looking suspension bridge with stunning view over the Sava Bohinja river as you wobble over and then you join the fantastic new BIKE HIKE path that leads you up river not far to a new wooden bridge with a little picnic place and parking for bikes..
Cross the wooden bridge and immediately go left following the yellow sign to join the tributary river path that flows directly from the waterfall.

It is also great now that you can experience a little bit how the path must have been the whole way before.. A muddy, sandy riverside path, the sound of thunder growing with every footstep as all your senses tell you a waterfall is approaching!
And in just two shakes of a dragon's tail, you are granted an audience with what can best be described as a "Little Storm" of water powering into an aqua lagoon with a white pebble beach.. Totally tropical, but this Green Slovenia Baby!
Take your photos, suck in the view, maybe even go for a paddle, but do not miss this little powerhouse of nature!

Probably walk back the same way, which will look so different now facing the other way down the valley and maybe find a secret spot by the river to chill out.
Maybe you will explore the Bike Hike track further up or down river and if the car park restaurant is open, maybe it is time for lunch?

How does Little Storm Slap fit into your day out?
Really, any way you want it to! Now you know you could do the whole experience in a little over an hour, but two would be better and maybe you will spend even longer by the river?
Our particular logistics were well planned for this early October Green adventure, visiting the waterfall first, then heading over to do Mostnica Gorge, (in our humble opinion the most beautiful gorge in Green Slovenia and that is saying something) and then jumping on the cable car up Mt Vogel for a view of Lake Bohinj from high above and spot of very late lunch at the mountain cafe!
But there is a huge choice of stuff you could mix into this day, including more time at lakes Bled or Bohinj. Maybe just visiting the two lakes for the first time with this fantastic Little Storm Waterfall hike in the middle?

Depending on the time of year will depend on whether it feels hot enough to go swim in the river or one of the lakes.. but folks.. do not miss Mostnica Gorge if you can help it!
A final tip for today is one we give all our guests heading here and that is to TURN right at the next BITNJE JUNCTION, (before Bohinj Bistrica) cos it drops you into an even more stunning side valley, which still leads to Bohinj lake, but via Stara Fuzina, which is where the hidden car park for Mostnica Gorge is anyway..
But the views, particularly facing towards the Julian Alps in this direction are so heavenly, it really is worth turning off at Bitnje..

The thing about Green Slovenia is there are just so many amazing little waterfalls, gorges and pretty much everything else that is fantastic about nature all over the place, but so many of them are hidden away behind signs still just in Slovenian or look simple to go find on a map until you actually do try to find them and you end up getting lost, stuck on a one way stone track or more than likely run out of time!
We know this as it has happened so often to us and we know most of the little warning signs to look out for too when exploring for new stuff, but by far the most important thing to do beforehand is a little research and the best possible advice always comes from someone who has actually been there before or from a local person.
So we will often phone the locl TIC (Tourist Info Office) ahead to speak with a local and just be sure we know where to park or eat or turn or whatever and even then we always usually end up having an extra little adventure within the green adventure!

Your problem is that the overwhelming majority of the very limited decent info you can access from afar about Green Slovenia is dominated by lake Bled, Ljubljana, Postojna Cave and Piran, so you can be forgiven for thinking these world class places are the only ones to go see when you finally get here!
But that is not the case..
You might also innocently compound your problems by allocating way too little time for visiting the most beautiful little Green country in Europe and then thinking Slovenia is way bigger than it actually is and end up booking multiple destinations to stay as if you are crossing Australia, when ALL you need to do is find one or maybe two fab locations to stay and you really can see the lot from there!!
These are the main reasons we packed this website full of all those little Green secrets you might like to know about before you come.. So you can at least get a chance to fill your days with real Green adventures between those better known sites, but once you have studied our Secret Places to Visit section and maybe also planned your logistics with our Secret Places Treasure Map, you might decide there actually are a few other different caves, lakes and castles for you!

Our articles try to tell you what you need to know about finding and visiting a secret place, cos we have already done the dirty work finding and exploring them.. tough job eh!!
And we are pretty much the same as you, foreigners in Green Slovenia struggling with the lingo, but fascinated by the ridiculous amount and variety of amazing Green stuff here!
We certainly hope this article will encourage you to go hike to Little Storm Waterfall and you will realise in enough time before that it is one of those little Green nuggets so perfectly placed for a couple of hours adventure in the middle of an epic day out..
