Piran.. Behind the Scenes
One of our favourite things to do on a day trip to nearby Piran is to try to get a little lost exploring the narrow, colourful, cobbled streets of the old town..
There are a surprising number of "Harry Potter like Diagon alleyways" hidden away out of sight from the sun drenched seaside promenade that stretches around the island edge of Piran, Slovenia's best known coastal spot to hang out in.

Piran is a peninsula, so almost completely surrounded by the warm Adriatic sea, but with a big chunk connected to the mainland where you first walk into the town from the car park and bus station and next to the little harbour.
So if you do get lost inside the high narrow walls of the old town, all you need to do is look for a street that ends in a flash of shimmering blue and then pop back out to the rock wall by the sea and work out where you are again!

This little blog contains just a few snaps we took on a sunny May day exploring those fun back streets and a few other places you might already recognise as Piran!
The thing that might surprise you the most about these photos is the complete lack of other people around..

We consistently tip April, May, September and October as the very best times to visit Green Slovenia.. Warm, sunny, but comparatively empty of visitors, when compared to the middle of summer & the school hols, even in the busier spots like Piran and Bled!
Actually, it is deliberate that we hardly mention the better known Bled or Ljubljana or Piran on this website, we prefer to concentrate on the other numerous secret Green places that you almost certainly will not know about in our blogs and Secret Places to Visit articles..

There is so much stuff already on the internet about Piran & chums anyway that we really do not need to add to all the Hubba Bubba, but even in such a world famous place, there are still little secret places to go find!
We love every little bit of the Slovenian Riviera and you would be totally missing out if you thought the only bit of seaside worth visiting in Green Slovenia was Piran, when it is so easy for guests to pick their day and go visit a completely different seaside location like Portoroz, Strunjan, Moon Bay, our own personal fave Izola, Koper and Ankaran..

There are also lots of other Adriatic possibilities in Italy AND Croatian Istria AND a fantastically huge Slovenian Coastal Hinterland stuffed with vineyards and olive groves too, ALL easily reachable from the Lodge!
Green Slovenia is packed full of so many amazing places to visit with VERY short distances across such a tiny pint sized country! So to get the very best out of your limited holiday time here it is much better to stay nimble by selecting a great loction as your base camp and then pick & choose your daytrips each day..

There is no need to stay on the coast, when a selected daytrip or two is more than enough and gives you time to also experience the mountaitains, lakes, vineyards and everything else avaialble here!
It is such a wonderful and exciting feeling to be able to just whizz down to the coast on the day of your choice, with the best weather, least traffic and maybe also along the way pop in to the little Medieval Fortress Church between the Lodge and the coast to see the uber impressive Dance of Death Fresco in Hrastovlje Church and maybe also the view of 3 countries from Socerb Castle too!

And there is plenty of time to then sneak into Piran as the other visitors struggle with their suitcases and try to find out of town parking!
Of course you will go to the top of the stunning Venetian tower to see the panorama view of the red roofed peninsula and eat at a fish restaurant with a sea view, sip coffee and slurp gelato at a cafe as the people wander by and maybe clamber over the rocks to have a dip in the warm Mediterranean water..

But our advice is to get lost!
So here below are a few more of our photos from that lovely day out in busy old Piran..
